Thomas "Tom" Joseph Devlin

Thomas Joseph Devlin, better known as Tom, age 66 of West Jefferson, NC passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Tom was born on November 2, 1951 in Bethesda, MD to Ralph Joseph and Katherene (Kitty) Wilhelmina Kafer Devlin. He was preceded in death by his father.

Tom was a devoted, hardworking and loyal man. Tom spent most of his life living in Maryland until 2015 when he retired to West Jefferson, NC with his wife, Adrienne.  Tom graduated from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN where he was also a charter member of Sigma Chi.  He retired after 34 years of working with the United States House of Representatives in Washington D.C. as the Senior Service Officer with the Architect of the Capitol. He was a man of many words who loved to talk, made friends easily and had quite the sense of humor. He was a lover of food and drink (particularly bourbon)– a true Marylander at heart in his love of crabs and seafood, and an incredible chef who was passionate about cooking meals for his family and others in need. He was a man of strong faith and served God by caring for others. He was a Deacon at First Baptist Church in Crofton, MD and an active member of First Baptist Church in West Jefferson.

More importantly, Tom was a devoted, hardworking and loyal husband and father. His family and his dogs were what he lived for – he was a steadfast and patient caretaker to his wife, and an incredible role model to his two children. He stood up for what he believed in and worked hard his whole life to provide for them. The Devlin family always says, “All dogs need a Tom”… and he absolutely adored them: Duke (his childhood love), Regal (the love of his life), Sammy (his current companion), and Storey, Bailey & Flappy (his “adopted” dogs).

Mr. Devlin is survived by: his wife Adrienne Marie Smith Devlin, one daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Devlin (Meg) & fiancé Jared Pierce of Cambridge, MA, one son, Mark Thomas Devlin of Baltimore, MD. He also held some “adopted” daughters very dear to his heart:  Gina Esposito of Catonsville, MD, Joanna Cronkhite of Springfield, VA, Holly Smith of Lynn, MA, Martha Limberick and Debbie Smith of Fredericksburg, VA.  He is also survived by his mother, Katherene (Kitty) of Fort Myers, FL, two brothers, Larry Devlin and wife Stephanie of Fort Myers, FL, Ronald (Ron) Devlin and wife Patti of Katy, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, May 7, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in West Jefferson, NC by Rev. Dr. Michael Lea. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the Church.
