Barbara Helen Graybeal

Barbara Helen Graybeal, age 94 of Creston, passed away in September of 2020. Mrs. Graybeal was born on July 12, 1926 in Ashe County to Lester and Chessie Elliott Hartsoe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Graybeal; and brothers, Miles Hartsoe and Claude Hartsoe.

Aunt Helen was a warm, generous person who enjoyed spending time with her family.  Her nieces treasure the little gifts of jewelry she always wanted to give. She loved making cakes, cookies, and brownies. She made the best Divinity Fudge ever.

She moved to Washington DC at a young age and worked for AT and T.  Upon retirement she and her husband Bob returned to Ashe County where they made their home in the Rich Hill Community.

Aunt Helen loved animals. She had several pets through the years including a parrot named Mickey who lived with her for over 50 years. She later adopted her precious Chrissie, a much loved little black poodle who loved to walk with her.  They would get dressed up and walk down town together daily.

Barbara, or Helen as she was known to her family, loved country music and looked forward to the CMA awards each year.

Her sweet, generous spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Graybeal is survived by:  sister, Irene Robinson Walker of Warrensville; sister-in-law, Jane Hartsoe Parker of Jefferson; nieces and nephews, Saundra Hartsoe Day (John) of West Jefferson, Sam Hartsoe (Laura) of West Jefferson, Nancy Robinson Reeves (John) of West Jefferson, Susan Robinson Hoosier (Jim) of Warrensville and Chris Robinson (Yolanda) of West Jefferson. A special great-nephew, Justin Miller of Mountain Home, Idaho also survives.

A private graveside service will be held at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
