Wayland Eugene Cox

Wayland Eugene Cox, age 75, of West Jefferson, passed away on Monday, November 3, 2025 at his home. He was born in Ashe County, North Carolina on October 11, 1950 to the late Fred Barton and Katie Miller Cox. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lynne Parlier Cox.

Wayland devoted his career to education as a carpentry teacher at the Career Center and later with Ashe County High School. He shared his skill and craftsmanship with countless students over the years, guiding them not only in woodworking but in the value of hard work and pride in one’s trade. Through his leadership, many projects were completed across Ashe County—homes were built that helped fund tools and future projects for the carpentry program, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to benefit the community.

In addition to his teaching, Wayland was a lifelong farmer. He took great joy in tending to his land—growing Christmas trees, blueberries, and fruit in his orchards, and creating homemade jams and jellies to share with family and friends. He was also an avid beekeeper and enjoyed caring for his hives and harvesting their honey.

Wayland’s commitment to service extended beyond the classroom and the farm. He was a proud and dedicated member of the Glendale Springs Volunteer Fire Department, where he served faithfully alongside his friends and neighbors for many years.

Above all, Wayland cherished his family and found his greatest happiness in time spent with his loved ones—especially his grandchildren, who brought endless joy and pride to his life.

Mr. Cox is survived by: two sons, Greg Cox and wife Beth of Fleetwood, and Andrew Cox and wife Laura of West Jefferson; one daughter, Amy White and husband Adam of Durham; three brothers, Fred Cox and Larry Cox both of West Jefferson, Willard Cox of Taylorsville, five sisters, Lula Severt, Ann Severt, Lola Cox, Lenna Hodgson all of West Jefferson and Mary Miller of Jefferson, six grandchildren, Sophia Cox, Elliott Cox, Leah Cox, Ava Cox, Addison White and Archer White; several nieces and nephews also survive.
