Owilla P. Landreth, wife of James D. Landreth, Cochranville, PA, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Christiana Hospital, Newark, Delaware at the age of 84.
Born on June 16, 1939 in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, she was the daughter of Lowell and Margaret Farmer Pennington. Owilla lived a full life, beginning with her childhood in Creston N.C. where she attended Riverview High School. Following her marriage to Jim and moving to Pennsylvania, she cleaned houses to help pay the bills. She soon attended school in Coatesville, Pa to become a hairdresser. This vocation followed her through life, eventually working side by side with her husband in his barber shop. She loved spending time with her ‘Ladies’ and once she retired and moved to Dagsboro, DE, she continued by donating her talents to the patients who were going through hospice care.
Owilla had a green thumb and spent time making beautiful flower beds. She and Jim grew a huge vegetable garden together and happily shared the produce with all their neighbors and friends. She was known for her good southern cooking and could whip up a meal on a moments notice. She traveled the country on the back of Jim’s motorcycle with the Piston Poppers and they bowled on a bowling league together. Traveling to Hawaii for their 50th wedding anniversary was a highlight, as well as trips to Alaska, Yosemite, Yellowstone, South Dakota and many more. You could always find her listening to her country music or gospel. She enjoyed dressing in the colorful outfits as a member of the Red Hat Society which soon turned into the neighborhood ‘Lunch Bunch’.
Family was very important to Owilla. First and foremost, she was a devoted homemaker, and loving wife to Jim celebrating 67 years of marriage together. She was a kind and nurturing mother to her daughters and her love and caring spread to their extended families. In 2019, Jim and Owilla relocated to Honeycroft Village in Cochranville, PA to be closer to them.
Owilla is survived by her husband, James Darold Landreth of Cochranville, PA; her daughters, Patricia Ann Johnson (Mike) and Pamela Diane Thompson (Chuck Freese) both of Cochranville, PA; her sisters, Mary Elliot (Ivan) of West Jefferson, NC; Peggy (David) Richardson of Creston, NC; Kathy (Richard) Bryant of Ararat, NC; and sister-in-law, Carol Lea Pennington of Creston, NC; and too many nieces and nephews to list! She was predeceased in death by her beloved brother, Joseph Glenn Pennington; mother, Margaret Farmer Pennington and father, Lowell Pennington; all of Creston, NC.
Family & friends will be received Saturday, August 19, 2023 at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, 3470 U.S. Highway 221 North, Crumpler, NC 28617 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, with services performed by Rev. Jonathon Eggers & Rev. Larry Shepherd immediately following the visitation. Burial will be at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. Friends are welcome to join the family at the funeral home for a luncheon following the services.
A memorial service to honor Owilla Landreth will also be held at Faith Bible Chapel, 140 Bernard Avenue, Cochranville, PA on September 2, 2023 at 11:00 am with a luncheon to follow. A special thanks to Pastor Scott Althouse for his ongoing love towards Owilla and her family.
