Maxine Atwood Friesland, age 78, of Jefferson, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the home of her daughter in Norwood, North Carolina. She was born October 27, 1947, in Ashe County to the late Calvin and Gladys McGuire Atwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard Monroe Friesland.
Maxine was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who found her greatest joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She especially loved singing, and her heart was lifted most when singing hymns of faith. A faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in West Jefferson, Maxine shared her love of music as a member of the church choir, where her voice and spirit were a blessing to many.
She had a special calling as a caregiver, opening her home and her heart to children over the years. To those she lovingly cared for, she was affectionately known as “Mackie” or “Momma Mackie,” names that reflected the warmth, patience, and nurturing love she gave so freely. Her gentle presence and servant’s heart left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Mrs. Friesland is survived by her son, Calvin Friesland (Taria) of Glade Valley; her daughter, Wendy Friesland of Norwood; her sister, Barbara Barker of Crumpler; three grandchildren, Steven Roten (Alex) of Statesville, Aaron Roten of Norwood, and Clara Friesland of Glade Valley; and six great-grandchildren, Madyson, Addison, A.J., Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Samuel. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Joanne Poe Cancer Center, c/o Ashe Memorial Hospital, 200 Hospital Avenue, Jefferson, North Carolina 28640.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 2026 at 12:00 noon at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Reverend Kirby McNeill and Jim Turnmire. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon prior to the service at Ashelawn.
