John Henry Smyre

John Henry Smyre, a beloved father, loving grandfather, dedicated community servant, and friend to many, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2025 at Forsyth Medical Center. John was born on September 3, 1947 in Guilford County, North Carolina to the late Paul Sigmon Smyre Sr. and Daisy Mae Webb Smyre. John was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, North Carolina, where he often volunteered and found joy in serving others especially through the wood lot ministry. After retiring and moving to Ashe County, he poured his time and energy into his community. He served as the Market Manager of the Ashe County Farmers Market, where he built lasting relationships and supported local growers and artisans. He also played an active role in Keep Ashe Beautiful, the Ashe Arts Council, the Christmas in July Festival, and Ashe Advantage, always eager to lend his skills and heart wherever they were needed.

In his earlier years, John served his country in the Marine Corps Reserve during the late 1960s and early 1970s, a commitment that instilled in him a lifelong sense of honor and service.

Above all, John loved his family deeply and was a wonderful father, always present, supportive, and proud of his children. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, and his genuine love for the people and places that shaped his life.

He will be dearly missed by his family, his church family, and the countless friends he made throughout his years of service to the community.
