John William Roberts Sr.

John William Roberts Sr. passed peacefully in his home on August 24, 2025 at the age of 91.John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was affectionately known as Papaw. In 1955 he graduated High School and was set to attend college on a Basketball Scholarship. However, his country called him to serve and he spent 2 years stationed in Japan with the US Army.Later in life, and after retirement, John spent his years living a peaceful life. He worked for years beside his wife and son in the greenhouse, and many Saturdays at the Ashe County Farmers Market.He lived quietly but loved big and proud, and the legacy he leaves is the depth of love he had for his family.He is survived by his wife Madge Roberts; his son, John Jr. (Robin); two grandchildren, Kassee (Michael) and Jordan (Cara); four great-grandchildren Bekah, Walker, Asher and Jace; and one sister, Mary.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers Herman, Kermit, Thomas and Paul; and one sister, Shirley.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 2:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Michael Kurtz. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm one hour prior to the service.
