John Richard Neal, age 72, of Jefferson, passed away Friday, January 23, 2026, at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Neal was born October 8, 1953, in Ashe County to the late Jack Rudolph Neal and Donna Jones Neal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Zachariah Neal, and his brother, Harold Grant “Pete” Neal.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army, retiring after 20 years of dedicated service. During his military career, he served as a tank commander and was stationed both in Germany and throughout the United States. His service reflected his strong sense of duty, discipline, and commitment.
Following his military career, John enjoyed a life filled with creativity and hands-on pursuits. He loved woodworking, working on cars in his younger years, and was always eager to try new things. He had a deep love for animals of all kinds, treating them with care and affection.
Above all, John was a devoted family man. He was married to his beloved wife, Kathy Neal, for 51 years, and he took great joy in doting on his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Mr. Neal is survived by: his wife, Kathy Victoria Lee Neal; two sons, John Glen Neal of the home and Jack Edward Neal of Jefferson; one sister, Jackie LaJoie of Jefferson; five grandchildren, Ivy Nichole Neal, Blake Austin Neal, Cricket Tyler Neal, Danielle Brooke Neal, and Chloe Avalon Neal; two great-grandchildren, Penelope Neal and Amber McKiddy; several niece and nephews also survive.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
John will be remembered for his service, creativity, kindness, and unwavering love for his family.
