J.D. Calhoun

J.D. Calhoun, age 93, of Creston in the Rich Hill Community, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025 at Margate Health & Rehab Center, just five months and 28 days after the passing of his beloved wife, Tressie Mae Hooiser Calhoun. J.D. was born on May 2, 1932 in Ashe County, North Carolina to the late, Edward Elzie and Letha Roop Calhoun. In additon to his wife and parents he was also preceded in death by a step-sister, Jean Jackson.

J.D. was a man whose life was defined by love, hard work, and devotion to family. He loved talking and sharing stories, and it was often said that he couldn’t get his farm work or feeding done because neighbors and friends would stop by just to chat awhile. Alongside his beloved wife Tressie, he worked faithfully on the family farm, never shying away from the challenges of farm life, and teaching the value of perseverance, dedication, and care to his children and grandchildren. Their partnership was one of love, respect, and shared purpose, leaving a legacy that will endure through generations.

He is survived by four sons, Richard Calhoun (Teresa) of Creston, Donnie Calhoun (Sherry) of Warrensville, Randy Calhoun (Lisa) of Warrensville, and Tommy Calhoun (Paige) of Creston; two sisters, Kate Hoosier (Ray) of Delaware and Wilma Greene (Eddie) of Boone; thirteen grandchildren, Daniel, Derek, Emma, Grant, Jordan, David, Stephanie, Nathan, Laura, Lily, Micaela, Jake and Katie; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Though his family grieves his passing, they find comfort in knowing J.D. has been reunited with Tressie. The image of them "together again"—free from pain, hand in hand, and smiling—brings peace amid the sorrow.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sapp Cemetery by Rev. Frank Woods, with military rites.

Memorials may be made to the Sapp Cemetery ℅ Carroll Roten, 2422 Rich Hill Rd., Creston, NC 28615.

J.D. Calhoun’s life was a testament to love, hard work, and family devotion. He will be deeply missed on this earth, but his enduring legacy and reunion with Tressie remind all who knew him that true love never ends.
