Rev. James “Jim” Wiley Greer, a faithful servant of the Lord, went home to be with his Savior on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering devotion, humble service, and heartfelt ministry. He was born in West Virginia on December 11, 1940 to the late James Ballard and Ethel Lee Crumb Greer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, brother, Roger Greer, sisters, Tressie Taylor, Ella Mae Francis and his wife, Christine Pennington Greer.
A devoted Christian, Jim dedicated his life to studying God’s Word, spending countless hours reading his Bible and walking closely with the Lord. He served faithfully as pastor of Sugar Grove Baptist Church for many years, touching the lives of countless individuals through his preaching, prayer, and pastoral care. Fittingly, Rev. Greer preached his final sermon on Easter Sunday, a day celebrating Christ’s resurrection.
Outside of the pulpit, Jim found joy in God’s creation. He had a natural green thumb and loved spending time in his garden, nurturing both flowers and vegetables with care and skill. He also enjoyed birdwatching, finding peace and wonder in the simple beauty of the birds that visited his yard.
Rev. Greer is survived by: sons, James Anthony (Tony) Greer of Creston, Dwayne Thomas Greer of Lansing, daughter, Anita Greer of Creston, sisters, Letha Davis Pruitt of Creston, Mary Blevins of Lansing, Dorothy Price of Lansing, brothers, Clifton Greer of Creston, Don Greer of Wilkesboro, Dennis Greer of Warrensville, Daniel Greer of Lansing, David Greer of Ohio, grandchildren, Derrick Greer, Sam Greer, Dustin Greer, Sheena McNeill, Sierra Greer, Katrina Greer, Heather Greer, Kelly Greer and Alexis Greer; ten great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 3:00 pm at Sugar Grove Baptist Church by Ministers David and Daniel Greer. Burial will follow in the Perry Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the family, c/o Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, 3470 US Hwy 221 North, Jefferson, NC 28640.
Rev. Greer’s life was marked by kindness, humility, and a steadfast commitment to sharing the love of Christ. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, his church, and all who were blessed to know him.
