Herbert Glenn Richardson, age 92, of West Jefferson, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
He was born April 20, 1933, in Lansing, North Carolina, to the late Wilda Lee Richardson and Mary Alberta Miller Richardson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Betty Ruth Hart Richardson, and his son, Robert Glenn Richardson.
Mr. Richardson was a man of quiet strength and enduring faith, having been of the Baptist faith throughout his life. He retired from Thomasville Furniture after many dedicated years of service and later continued working at the Bina convenience center, where he greeted his community with a warm smile and friendly conversation for nearly two decades. Remarkably, his last day of work was on his 86th birthday—a testament to his strong work ethic and love for staying active.
Herbert had a passion for woodworking, and he found joy in crafting with his hands and sharing his creations with family and friends. He was also an avid checker player for most of his life. He was the Ashe County checker champion for more than a dozen years in a row. One of the tournaments he participated in was featured in the Lenore DePree painting titled “The Checker Tournament in the Barber Shop.” Herbert will be remembered for his steady presence, kind spirit, and the simple, meaningful life he lived.
Mr. Richardson is survived by: two daughters, Mary Johnson of Crumpler and Sherry Blevins of West Jefferson; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Lindley of Jefferson; five grandchildren, Andy Richardson of West Jefferson, Kevin Richardson (Abi) of West Jefferson, Lora Miller (TJ) of West Jefferson, Rebecca Reedy (Mitchell) of Damascus, VA, and Emily Blevins of West Jefferson; six great-grandchildren, Hailey Miller, Leigha Miller, Bryson Reedy, Cameron Reedy, Gracie Richardson, and Owen McGuire; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, 2025 at 4:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Jimmy Williams, Elder Lundy Finley, and Rev. Lloyd Day. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, one hour prior to the funeral service.
The family respectfully requests no food please. Flowers will be accepted.
A cherished father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend, Herbert's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
