Gwendolyn Hopkins Lewis, a pillar of strength and faith, peacefully departed this world at the remarkable age of 103 on Thursday, December 21, 2023. Surrounded by the love of her family, Gwendolyn transitioned to eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering devotion and kindness.

Born in Ashe County on December 1, 1920 to the late William “Bill” Palmer and Rosa Winebarger Hopkins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by five sisters, one brother, husband, Gordon Jasper Lewis and grandson, Brian Lewis.

Gwen grew up with a deep sense of faith that would become a guiding light throughout her extraordinary life. She was a longstanding member of Bald Mountain Baptist Church, making her their oldest member. Her steadfast devotion to her faith enriched the lives of all who knew her.

Gwendolyn's work ethic was a testament to her character. A diligent and hard worker, she tackled life's challenges with resilience and determination. Her skills in the kitchen were legendary, as she shared her love through the art of cooking. In the community she was known for delicious butterscotch pies.

Known for her kind heart, Gwendolyn was a beacon of compassion in her community. Her caring nature extended beyond her immediate family, as she always found ways to support and uplift others. Whether through a comforting word, a warm meal, or a helping hand, Gwendolyn touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark of love and generosity.

As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Gwendolyn showered her family with boundless love. Left to cherish her memory are, two sons, Larry G. Lewis (Carolyn) of Warrensville, Lanny Lewis (Marie) of West Jefferson, daughter, Joyce Watson (Ron) of Cary, three grandchildren, Stephanie Sanders, Stephen Lewis and Cynthia Turner; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Bald Mountain Baptist Church by Rev. Jackie Stone and Rev. John Elledge. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm prior to the service at the church.

The family respectfully requests no food please. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to: Medi Home Hospice, PO Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.

Gwendolyn Hopkins Lewis will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and the community she served so faithfully. As we celebrate her remarkable life, let us remember the joy she brought to our hearts and the legacy of love that will endure for generations to come. May she find eternal peace in the embrace of her Creator.
