George Douglas “Doug” Simmons, age 80, of Lansing, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025 at his home.
Doug was born in Caldwell County, NC on January 22, 1945, and was lovingly raised by his grandparents, Tom and Effie Simmons. Their guidance and care shaped the strong, hardworking, and compassionate man he became.
Doug was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who built his life around family, hard work, and helping others. He was married to the love of his life, Brenda, for 61 years, and together they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and steadfast support.
He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Simmons; sons Scott Simmons and wife Patsy of West Jefferson, and Shane Simmons and wife Kim of Jefferson; granddaughter Alexa Nelson and husband Jesse of Hampton, VA; great-grandson Arthur Nelson; aunt Mary Simmons of West Jefferson; and many nieces and nephews.
Doug enjoyed a wide variety of pastimes throughout his life. Whether he was playing a round of golf, casting a fishing line, reading a good book, or working outside, he found joy in staying active and appreciating the world around him. His generous spirit extended into his neighborhood as well—Doug was always willing to lend a hand, and many neighbors remember his kindness in helping with their lawn care and outdoor needs.
He spent 45 dedicated years working at Sprague, later United Chemi-Con, where he formed lifelong friendships and earned the respect of his coworkers.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:00–2:00 pm prior to the service at Ashelawn.
The family respectfully requests no food, but flowers will be appreciated.
Doug will be remembered for his steady presence, his helpful nature, and the quiet love he shared so deeply with those around him. His legacy lives on in his family, his friendships, and the many lives he touched along the way.
