Douglas Walter Sheets, age 90 of Crumpler passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Margate Health and Rehab. He was born on April 3, 1935 in Ashe County, North Carolina to the late Walter and Nettie Burkett Sheets. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a son, Phillip Douglas Sheets, a daughter, Patricia Dawn Sheets Rash, brothers, Donald Sheets, Richard Sheets and Willard Sheets, sisters Margarite Sheets Bare and Raychella Sheets Bennett.
Douglas graduated from high school in Jefferson before continuing his education at Appalachian State University in Boone. Following his studies, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, an experience that reflected his strong sense of duty and commitment.
He found great joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. He loved gardening and spending time outdoors hunting and fishing, especially when those moments were shared with his sons and his grandson. Those days created memories that will be treasured for generations.
He was a loyal friend to many and built lasting relationships wherever life took him. Douglas will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and all whose lives he touched.
Mr. Sheets is survived by his wife, Shirley Shatley Sheets, three sons, Tony Ray Sheets of Crumpler, Christopher Guynn Sheets of West Jefferson and Scotty Randall Sheets (Ginger) of Warrensville. Also surviving are two sisters, Wileen Sheets Fortner (A.B.) of Jefferson and Beverly Sheets Waddell (Bill) of West Jefferson, one brother, Frank Sheets (Barbara) of Jefferson, one grandson Joshua Scott Sheets and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at 2:00pm in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens by Rev. J.D. Walton with Military Rites. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel one hour prior to the Graveside Service.
Flowers will be accepted, the family respectfully request no food please.
