Clarence Edward VanDyke, age 87, of Crumpler, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025. He was born on April 27, 1938, in Damascus, Virginia, to the late Victor John and Minnie VanDyke. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Gloria Jean Kennedy VanDyke, as well as all of his siblings.

Clarence proudly served his country in the United States Army and later dedicated many years of hard work as a truck driver for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. A man of the outdoors, Clarence found joy in horseback riding, hunting, and fishing—especially deep-sea fishing with his son John which remained one of his fondest memories throughout his life.

He was a man who appreciated the simple pleasures. He enjoyed country music, and few things brought him more satisfaction than a good cake of cornbread with onions and milk. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love for the land and life’s simple joys.

Mr. VanDyke was also a longtime member of Long Branch Baptist Church, where he found strength, fellowship, and a sense of purpose.

He is survived by his children, John VanDyke (Kelly) of Delaware, Donna Mayle of Crumpler, Eric VanDyke (Sylvia) of Maryland, seven grandchildren, Ashley Smedley (Chad) and Amanda VanDyke both of Delaware, J.C. VanDyke of Ohio, Cody Mayle (Tasha) of West Jefferson, Amy Mayle of Crumpler, Chris VanDyke (Leah) and Brittany Miller (Zack) both of Maryland. Also surviving are three nieces, Linda Cooper of Lansing, Jane Olguin of Florida and Caroline Roldan of Pennsylvania as well as 18 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 12:00 noon at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Pastor Brian Walls.
