Buddy Emerson, 87, of Whitetop, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Grayson Rehab and Health Care, surrounded by the quiet mountain beauty he loved.
Born November 28, 1937, Buddy was the son of the late Larry Woodrow and Hattie Lou Waddell Emerson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Jane Coe Emerson; his brother, Edison Emerson; and his sister, Virginia Elliott.
Faith and service shaped Buddy’s life. A devoted member of Upper Helton Baptist Church, he served as both deacon and Sunday School teacher, sharing the Word with warmth and a ready smile. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during peacetime, then returned home to a lifetime close to the land.
Buddy was happiest outdoors. Whether hunting grouse, casting a fly into a mountain stream, or leading friends along Wilson Creek as a guide, he carried a deep respect for God’s creation. For 28 years he welcomed visitors as a park ranger at Grayson Highlands State Park, where his easygoing nature and love for people made every guest feel at home. He truly never met a stranger.
Buddy’s memory lives on in his brothers Stephen Emerson (Lula Belle) of Jefferson, Rex Emerson (Susan) of West Jefferson, and Mark Emerson (Patricia) of Independence, VA; his sister Bernice Emerson of Lansing; and his sister-in-law and caregiver, Minnie Huffman. Many nieces and nephews will remember “Uncle Buddy” for his kind heart and gentle humor.
The family offers heartfelt thanks to the staff of Grayson Rehab and Health Care for their exceptional care as well as her devoted caregiver Minnie Huffman and to all who have shared their love and support.
A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Larry Peak officiating. Burial will follow in Spencer Branch Community Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour before the service. A catered meal will be provided at the Helton Community Center after the graveside service.
The family respectfully requests no food be brought, and in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the CART Fund for Alzheimer’s Research, c/o Ashe County Rotary Club, P.O. Box 1045, Jefferson, NC 28640.
Buddy’s life was a testament to faith, kindness, and a love of the outdoors. May the mountains he cherished echo his memory, and may his gentle spirit continue to inspire all who knew him.
