Barbara Frances Phelps

Barbara Frances Phelps, age 75 of West Jefferson, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025 at her home. She was born in Lexington, North Carolina to the late John William and Ruth Love Byerly Phelps. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Phelps, William Phelps and Avery Phelps.

Barbara found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a love for jigsaw puzzles, often spending quiet afternoons piecing together beautiful scenes with patience and care. Her love of the outdoors was evident in her garden, where she lovingly planted and tended to her flowers.

She was happiest outdoors—taking walks, enjoying fresh air, and watching the world go by. Her beloved cat was her constant companion. Barbara also had a collector’s heart, finding delight in searching for and buying all sorts of things.

She will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

She is survived by two sisters, Alice Roten and Ruby Campbell along with dear friends who brought joy to her days, as well as the compassionate social workers and caregivers who supported her with kindness and dignity throughout her life.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 11:00 am at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Tommy McClure. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

She will lie in state from 10:30-11:00 am for thirty minutes prior to the service.
