Mr. James Elmer Owens, better known as Jay, age 88 of Creston, died on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at his home. Mr. Owens was born on September 28, 1929 in Ashe County to Frealin Smith Owens and Ollie Emeline Pennington Owens. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Deborah Lynn Owens, two brothers, and four sisters.
Mr. Owens was a member of Riverview Missionary Baptist Church. He loved to sing and was an example to others. He enjoyed helping people, being a farmer and working his cattle.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Pastor Evan Moore, Rev. Russell Hart, and Rev. Shannon Courtner. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
Mr. Owens is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Joanne McCoy Owens; one son, Jim Owens and wife Eve of Georgia; two daughters, Pat Lefevers and husband Robert of Creston and Pamela Owens of Creston; five sisters, Josie Odom of Kingsport, TN, Mary Osborne and Ruth Osborne, both of Creston, Louella Weaver of Mountain City, TN, and Ann Owens of Boone; grandchildren, Diane Lipford, Cynthia Antol, Maranda Dickey, and James Owens; also surviving are 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
